Drowning Prevention in Odisha, India
Drowning is one of the leading cause of unintentionally injury death globally. In India, drowning deaths were estimated to exceed 62,000 in 2017. Drowning risk is shaped by a complex interaction of demographic, socio-economic, occupational and environmental factors such as age, sex, occupational exposure, and climate-related hazards. This study aims to explore community members' lived experiences, perceptions of drowning risks, protective factors, and prevention opportunities


Hookah and Oral Nicotine Pouch Use in Undergraduate College Students
This qualitative study aims to investigate the beliefs, attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors of undergraduate college students related to use of hookah and oral nicotine pouches to inform approaches to educate and affect behavior change to reduce exposure to carcinogens and other harmful constituents among this population.

GRIT 2026 Summer Internship
In Summer 2026, GRIT supported Zahra Iskandar, BS+MPH student in the Department of Global, Environmental, and Occupational Health, School of Public Health, University of Maryland, to carry out an internship at Mahidol University in the Department of Environmental Health, Faculty of Public Health. In Thailand, Zahra carried out environmental health research.


GRIT 2024 Summer Internships
In Summer 2024, GRIT welcomed three cohorts of interns to Kenya and Uganda. The first cohort spent a week with Project Elimu in Kibera working on the 'It Begins with Her' research project. The second cohort volunteered for the Energy In Action Splash Camp and then partnered with Children's Chance International on community outreach related to menstrual health and road safety research in Lira. The third cohort partnered with the Trauma and Disability Unit (TRIAD) of the Maker


GRIT 2024 Spring Break Trip

In Summer 2022, GRIT Interns volunteered for the Energy In Action Splash Camp and coordinated Uganda's first large in-person Drowning Prevention Day in partnership with the Ugandan Ministry of Health and other stakeholders. They also engaged in community outreach activities in Lira with Children's Chance International.
