Student Fellow Program

Undergraduate and graduate students interested in advancing their knowledge and skills in global health research are invited to apply to the GRIT Lab as student fellows. Even though the lab is based out of University of Maryland, students from partner institutions are invited to apply.

Student fellows:

Conduct real-world global health research over the course of several semesters
Travel to partner organizations abroad to complete research activities
Receive research trainings in literature review, data analysis, research methods, and more

Zahra Iskandar, MPH Student '27

To fulfill her MPH internship requirement, Zahra completed a six-week internship at Mahidol University in Thailand focused on air quality, climate change and health, and occupational health and safety.

Zahra worked on developing a spatial assessment of environmental risk priority along Bangkok's bus network using GIS analysis tools to integrate multiple variables representing heat, air pollution, and vegetation conditions.

The resulting risk maps illustrated areas with varying levels of environmental risk priority between high- and low-pollution time periods. The findings were then used to inform recommendations for occupational health protections and planning strategies for bus transit workers. Well done, Zahra!
